Panels featured top healthcare professionals, community leaders, and industry experts tackling the most pressing health issues facing Black America today. This groundbreaking summit included a program of insightful discussions on medical advancements, powerful conversations on equitable access, and actionable solutions to improve health outcomes in our communities. The Art of Listening—A Path to Better Health Outcomes: Reflections from the LEAD Summit Panel

In this reflection from the Society of Gynecologic Oncology (SGO) Leadership, Engagement, and Action in Diversity (LEAD) Summit, Kayla Nixon, MEd, shares insights from her panel discussion on the critical role of patient advocacy and the transformative power of listening in healthcare. Drawing from her own journey with PCOS and uterine cancer, Kayla highlights how poor listening delayed her diagnosis and emphasizes that both patients and providers have a role to play in improving communication. Kayla discusses the importance of a holistic, human-centered approach to care and reflects on the hope she found at the LEAD Summit, seeing a diverse and engaged medical community committed to bridging gaps through empathy, intentionality, and representation—key ingredients for creating a truly patient-centered and equitable healthcare system.

This was in invitation to share my uterine cancer story and discuss the work I’m doing with Bloom RVA, Richmond’s newest social club for Black women. It was an opportunity to discuss how real change happens through grassroots movements like Uterine Care Collaborative and Bloom RVA. It’s a discussion about where technology meets community, and why building spaces for Black women to connect, heal, and learn is just as critical as innovation.
